Why we build in public

The default mode of any "lab" is secrecy. Announce nothing, show nothing, launch when it's perfect. We think that's backwards — and not just for philosophical reasons. It's practical.

Secrecy feels safe, but it's the most expensive way to build. You hide the work until it's too late to change course, you polish things nobody asked for, and you lose the one resource that matters most: early, honest reactions.

What building in public actually gives us

  • Faster truth. A rough prototype in front of five real people beats six months of internal debate.
  • Better defaults. Public code gets read. Readers find the assumptions you didn't know you made.
  • Compounding trust. Every shipped experiment is a receipt. Ten receipts later, "trust us" isn't needed.

None of this requires courage. It requires a decision about what a lab is for. Ours is not to look finished — it's to find out what's true, in the open, while it's still cheap to be wrong.

We're not building an audience. We're building a paper trail. The audience is a side effect.

So: repos default to public, logs default to written, mistakes default to visible. If that sounds like your kind of lab, the door is still open.
